1963 : CTSS, Compatible Time Sharing System, univerzální operační systém, implementoval například přihlašování pomocí jména a hesla, umožňoval editaci textů, vzkazy mezi jednotlivými uživateli, RUNCOM (spouštění příkazu) umožňoval použití parametrů
1969 : Multics, univerzální systém vyvíjený Bellovými laboratořemi, s ambicemi nahradit všechny stávající OS. Svého cíle nedostál, ale inspiroval k vývoji OS UNIX.
1969 : UNIX (původně Unics). Multitasking, multiuser, modulární s monolitickým jádrem. Jeho vývoj započali Dennis Ritchie a Ken Thomson. Licence patří AT\&T a Bellovým laboratořím, nicméně vzniklo mnoho verzí pod různými licencemi.
1981 : MS-DOS singleuser, singletasking operační systém určený pro osobní počítače IBM x-86.
1984 : Mac OS, operační systém společnosti Apple Computer pro počítače Macintosh. Nabídl GUI a systém pro netechnicky zaměřeného uživatele.

For example, the GPLv2 in no way limits your use of the software. If you're a mad scientist, you can use GPLv2'd software for your evil plans to take over the world ("Sharks with lasers on their heads!!"), and the GPLv2 just says that you have to give source code back.
